New president and democracy
In December 1989, a new president was elected - Václav Havel. At the same time, communism ended in the Czech Republic and democracy began.
After a long time, the borders were also open. We also use the phrase "fall of the Iron Curtain
" in connection with the opening of borders. The Iron Curtain was the name given to the boundaries between western (= states where democracy was) and eastern bloc (= states where communism was) around the time after World War II.
Why am I writing this? I don't think many people think about why it's a day off today. But in my opinion, it's important to remember that there hasn't always been freedom in the Czech Republic, and to be grateful for that freedom.
